  1. Hi, @Daren F!

NAKIVO licenses cannot be mixed. Only one license file can be applied to NAKIVO installation.

If you need to change something in the license, you may contact the NAKIVO Sales Team to discuss the option to dismiss an old license and generate a new one instead of it.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

  2. @mdovey

    Hi, Matthew!

You are right. Now, we are working along with Synology to have our latest build version into DSM7 Package Center. At this point, Synology doesn't have the opportunity to install apps from external installers.

Please ensure that we are putting all our effort into having version 10.4.1 on DM7 approved soon, but there is no ETA yet.

But still, DSM 7 transporter is available after enabling system.transporter.allow.old from the expert settings:

Now, DSM 7 finally supports NBR v10.4!

I want to say thank you for your patience and participation during this time. We are deeply sorry for all the inconvenience it might have caused you. We are always striving to provide our customers with the best service possible. However, sometimes things don't depend on us.

Once again, thank you for your understanding. It is priceless!

  4. Hi, @Mike Spragg!

Could you please clarify if your VMWare host is the Free ESXi version? If yes, with the Free ESXi version, we have some limitations, and they come from VMWare.

When we make any changes or update Nakivo, we should check the 'sshd_config' file again inside the ESXi host to make connections and inventory from the Nakivo application.

If you need any further assistance, please let me know.

  5. Hi, @brauner!

As far as we know, the Free license for NAKIVO cannot be extended after one year. In case you want to keep the current configuration, you can purchase a license and apply paid licensee into the current free NAKIVO.

If you want to continue using the Free license, you need to uninstall the old one and install a new Free version.

Let me know if I you need any further assistance.

  6. Hi, @Jason!

Regarding the workaround with NFS or CIFS share:

     * Backup Repository on an NFS share, please make sure that all the necessary prerequisites are met:

    • The folder where you would like to create the Backup Repository exists on the share.
    • The share can be accessed from the machine on which the Assigned Transporter is installed.
    • You are using credentials with reading and writing permissions to the share.

    * Backup Repository on a Windows CIFS share, make sure that all the necessary prerequisites are met:

    • The folder where you would like to create the Backup Repository exists on the share.
    • The share can be accessed from the machine on which the Assigned Transporter is installed.
    • You are using credentials with reading and writing permissions to the share.
    • The share is compatible with Version 2 or later of the SMB protocol.

If the setup sharing is via the Site to Site VPN, the network speed belongs to your VPN network. You can do the speed test by transferring the file and tcpdump to check.

Let me know if you need any assistance.

  7. Hi, @SALEEL!

I am very sorry that we put you in such a position. The latest improvements in DSM7 were unexpected for everyone. And it makes us feel very sad that we can't provide you with our best service as usual. Our team was doing everything to accelerate the process. However, at this point, there is nothing we can do.

I understand your disappointment, and I apologize for all the inconvenience it has caused you. One of our main values is customers satisfaction. That's why this situation is frustrating. If only it depended on us!

At the moment I can only offer you the following options:

    1. You can temporarily install NAKIVO Backup & Replication on some other host and use the NAS-based repository as a CIFS/NFS share. When DSM7 is officially supported, then it will be possible to install NAKIVO on NAS again.

    2. Workaround for DSM 7:

    - Deploying a new NAKIVO installation somewhere else as Virtual Appliance (VA) or installing on a supported VM, Physical or NAS;

    - Share the repository folder on the Synology NAS with DSM7 as NFS / CIFS (SMB) share;

    - Add this repository as existing to the new NAKIVO installation;

    - Restore the configuration of old NAKIVO installation from Self-backup from the original repository.

For now, we are working closely with Synology to prepare the release, and we are almost at the final stage. However, we expect that we will need a few more weeks till the final release.

Again, I am very sorry for all the convenience!

  8. Hi, @Jlopez!

It is expected behavior. We just released the quick fix for the backup and replication, which is available on 10.4. However, the new feature introduced by VMware (new hardware support, etc.) is not supported. The full v7.0U3 will be implemented in v10.5, which we expect at the end of October.

Let me know if you need any other assistance.

  9. @sanches.romero,

Yes, you're right. During the free trial, you get all the features of the most advanced editions (vSphere Enterprise Plus and vCenter Server Standard). The trial license has a duration of 60 days. Note: you can use these 60 days when needed. Let's say you start using vCenter in the trial version for 30 days, and only after the evaluation month you buy the license. It means you will have 30 days remaining to go from the licensed to the evaluation mode. You can switch back to the evaluation mode any time you want.

At the same time, if your trial period expires and you have no license assigned, all the hosts will be disconnected from the vCenter. If you buy a license afterward, the ESXi hosts you added before will be reconnected automatically.

There is a comprehensive guide on the VMware licensing options, in case you are confused. https://www.nakivo.com/blog/vmware-vcenter-server-licensing-options/Official

  10. Hi, @sanches.romero!

The free version works on a standalone ESXi host. However, there are a lot of limitations you should consider:

    1. There isn't any official support. If you have any troubles, you can consult with the VMware community. However, there is no guarantee someone will solve your problem.
    2. If you have a VM with more than eight virtual processors, the VM will most likely fail as the maximum of the vCPU for each VM is eight.
    3. One of the most significant disadvantages is that you can't add the free ESXi host to vCenter. That's why you won't be able to migrate machines or use clustering features.
    4. There is no vStorage API available. vStorage Application Program Interface (API) is a data protection framework for centralized backup of VMs on a host level. It makes VM backup efficient, offloading CPU, storage and network.

Check more information about the free version of VMware ESXi in the NAKIVO blog  https://www.nakivo.com/blog/free-vmware-esxi-restrictions-limitations/
