Nakivo is installed as appliance without any changes. Only 2 VMs are backuped each night into the onboard repository. These VMs have about 50GB and 80GB disk size, so they are not very large.

After a few days I received this warning:

The "NAKIVO Backup & Replication" application is about to run out of memory.

How can it happen in this small installation using the default configuration?

Nakivo VM has 4GB memory and "top" shows about 2GB avail memory.

I can't believe that it is a problem of java heap size of director service in this small environment.

Please give me an instruction to solve the problem.

Hello @User Please follow the steps in this link (https://helpcenter.nakivo.com/display/KB/How+to+Allocate+More+RAM+to+NAKIVO+Director+Service).

Should you need any further information, please let us know. Best regards.

Thanks for your answer. Company I work for is Cubbit (site: www.cubbit.io - where you can find information about NGC:  BTB branch of Cubbit). Cubbit provides cloud services via a p2p network of specific device (that act as distributed storage nodes).
Cubbit Customers can consume storage via S3 compatible APIs. In order to do that, users are generally required to specify an s3 compatible third part application (as Nakivo):

    • url endpoint (that for cubbit is https://s3.cubbit.io)
    • a set of specific s3 credentials (access-key and secret-key), they can get from cubbit-console.

Nakivo configuration procedure does not allow (as far as I understand) to specify a generic URL. I assume that in some part of the application, there is a configuration file (or equivalent db-line, register-key etc.), that converts che chosen S3 provider option in the specific S3 url :

Cubbit would like to be an s3-storage option for Nakivo users (because several Cubbit customer, are also Nakivo users), and stop to suggest them to use a fuse-solution to workaround the lack of a direct connection.

We would like, one of the following:

    1. to be part of that option list as AmazonS3/Wasabi are (see picture).
    2. to let Nakivo user configure a generic S3 option connection by letting them specify a generic S3 endpoint url.

in the latter case, maybe, it's enough to modify some configuration file. In this case, please let us know which one.

    Thanks

    Ste-

@Ste-, we need clarification. Please tell us which provider you are talking about. Thank you so much for your attention and participation.

Yes, of course I mean removing LV, VG and PV.

Now I have done all steps to remove the old, unneeded 500GB partition. Until now everything is still working.

But you should put this use case into the Nakivo documentation, because using deduplication with a local repository is a common usage of a backup tool. Especially in small installations.

And it would be very usefull if deduplication is enabled by default!

Information about deduplication can be already found in our help center:

Please let us know if any other tech assistance is needed or the ticket can be closed. Thank you for your ideas 👍

@User Thank you for your post. I have sent all your suggestions to be taken into consideration, but the best way would be to generate and send a support bundle (https://helpcenter.nakivo.com/display/NH/Support+Bundles) to support@nakivo.com so our Technical Support team can investigate it and forward your feature request to our Product Development team for possible future implementation.

I would remove it from /etc/fstab, remove logical volume, delete partition /dev/sdb and finally remove the 500GB disk from the VM.

Is it enough? Or are additional steps needed to remove it properly?

@User, thank you for the update.

You need to remove LVM as well:

    lvremove LVNAME

    vgremove VGNAME

    pvremove DISKNAME

We are looking forward to hearing from you 👍

During creating a new repository I ended with "Cannot create the backup repository. The specified location does not exist."

It seems that I missed at least one step.

    What have I done:

    - Added a new virtual disk to my Nakivo VM

    - On the console: "Manage Nakivo services" and press F5 to refresh the list of disks. Now both disks (the default disk and my new disk) are visible.

    - Connected to Web GUI and "Add Backup Repository" with type "Local Folder", a new Name, Onboard Transporter and a new path to the local folder.

    - In the options I configured settings for deduplication.

It seems that I need to configure where the new disk is mounted in the filesystem (like /etc/fstab) . But how can I do that?

Hello, @User, thank you for your post. It can be helpful to other members of our community.

Please use the following Ubuntu article to mount a new disk: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/InstallingANewHardDrive

We look forward to hearing from you.

We installed Nakivo as VM on a VMware cluster and we want to use a backup repository on the local datastore.

The default "Data Size Reduction Settings" for the Onboard Repository are "Store backups in seperate files". Unfortunately this setting can't be changed.

As far as I know this means, that each VM is stored in separate files without deduplication. The backup size becomes very large.

How can I disable "storing in seperate files" and activate deduplication across VMs?

In principle the Onboard Repository is what we need, but we need deduplication.

My first idea was to delete the onboard repository and to create a new one with proper settings, but that is not possible.

Hello, @User, thank you for your patience. Option "Store backups in seperate files" can be set only during repository creation.

So to use deduplication please create a new repository without option "Store backups in seperate files" and use this repository as a target for the backup job.

When all jobs will be reconfigured to use the new repository, it will be possible to remove old repository from inventory and disk. I look forward to hearing from you.

    Best regards.

Any update on the ETA for this feature ?

We are also asked to encrypt the tapes.

Hello, @Sotiris Papasaikas, we are currently implementing a generic backup encryption feature, which will support encryption of backups stored on tape. But, unfortunately, I can't be more specific about the ETA. Be sure, we understand it is very important for our customers. Have a nice day!

Since the vSphere virtual appliance won't upgrade the OS on its own what is the process to upgrade from Ubuntu 20.04.5 LTS to 22.04.1 LTS?

Hello, @James B. Thank you for your post. I am sorry, but it is not a NAKIVO support-related question.

Please, consult with the Ubuntu site: https://ubuntu.com/server/docs/upgrade-introduction

Should you need any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me. Best regards.

We now use another application for backing up Microsoft 365 (e-mail). What I love about that application is that it has a pst export, this can be for individual items or a whole mailbox.

We found that quite useful and gives a bit more of the feeling you're in control with a recovery.

I'm now evaluating the Microsoft 365 backup of Nakivo, but found it can only recover items directly to an office 365 account.

Is there any plan of implementing a pst export functionality?

Could I suggest you include these instructions for manual download and installation on DSM 7 for the current and future versions on the main Updates page (with suitable caveats/warnings). The Synology approval process is clear far too slow (it can take months for an update to appear, and even then it tends to lag behind the current version), so I suspect most of us using Nakivo on synology are now updating manually (and how to do so is becoming a FAQ).

    Matthew

@mdovey Thank you for raising your question on the NAKIVO Forum. It has been escalated to the Product Team. I'll get back with the response as soon as they update me.

I escalated to the product Team. Got the following response: "The product Team does not have any ETA for this improvement. It is under review right now.".

On 22nd of August, you were 'working on it a short time ago'.

Already more than a year waiting on this. In the meantime, our license is almost expired, and the new prices have increased with 14%.

Maybe just change the naming of the editions to match the features and expectations:

    Pro -> Home

    Enterprise -> Business

    Enterprise plus -> Enterprise

@Martijn, please, can you give us some reference on your request in August. We will check the state of the request with our Product Team. We are looking forward to hearing from you.
