Hi everyone,

I was wondering what methods you all use to verify your VM backups are actually recoverable. With snapshots, consolidation, and other issues that can crop up, I’m starting to think just seeing a “backup successful” message isn’t always enough.

Do you run test restores regularly, use Nakivo’s built-in backup verification, or maybe have a different workflow to make sure the data is really safe?

Would love to hear what approaches work best for you all.

Great question and you're absolutely right to think that backup verification is necessary since it’s critical for ensuring true data protection.

You can use built-in features like:

✅ Backup Verification Jobs - These automatically test backup integrity by booting VMs from backup files in an isolated environment

✅ Screenshot Verification - Captures screenshots of booted VMs to visually confirm successful recovery

Best Practice Workflow:

  • Schedule regular verification jobs (weekly/monthly) for critical VMs.
  • Test full restore scenarios quarterly to different hardware/locations.
  • Document recovery procedures and test them with your team.
  • Monitor verification reports - don't just set and forget!

Pro Tips:

  • Use NAKIVO's Instant VM Recovery for quick testing without full restoration.
  • Consider automated testing scripts that verify specific applications post-recovery.
  • Keep recovery time objectives (RTO) realistic and test them regularly.
