As per the title. I'm just doing some planning. If Nakivo won't support PVE 9 in the next release (v11.1 must be soon), then I can push back my PVE 9 upgrade planning and testing, and prioritise some other tech projects. Thanks.

There are no confirmed updates regarding Proxmox 9.0 support yet.
Keep an eye on our release notes and announcements; we share updates there as soon as they’re available.

Well… yesterday I tested version 11.1 and, to my disappointment, it’s still not fully compatible with Proxmox VE 9. With the number of companies I see simply abandoning VMware and moving to Proxmox, it’s almost unbelievable that Nakivo hasn’t prioritized full compatibility immediately — which is causing it to lose ground to free solutions offering the same features (Proxmox Backup Server 4 includes the vast majority of them — immutability, individual file restore, deduplication, etc.). Strategically speaking, something feels misaligned here.

I attended an online Nakivo seminar earlier in the year. Checking my calendar it was called "Backup for Proxmox VE: Best Practices for Data Security" on the 16th April 2025. The presenter said that 11.1 - with the screenshot verification and flash VM boot for Proxmox - was about a week away. Well that week turned into about 6 months! So it seems that 11.1 had a difficult birth. I have no idea what the hold up was. But hopefully whatever it was is all sorted now, and that they have lots of good devs working on the Proxmox side of things (I couldn't care less about VMware any more). I personally won't upgrade until there's a PVE 9.1 - there's no need to be on the bleeding edge, when 8.4 is working fine for me. Of course, Nakivo will need to support 9.1x before I do so.

I think the reason why they didn't add PVE9.x support in 11.1, was because 11.1 was already massively delayed, and they quite-rightly couldn't delay it any further.

In a recent Nakivo seminar just this last week, it was said that PVE 9.x support will come in 11.2. There were no promises on dates. Even if they said a timeframe I'd be sceptical, based on the 11.1 experience. My best guess would be in a few month's time, but that's just a guess.

Does PBS 4 have the equivalent of Flash VM Boot? That's the main reason I am sticking with Nakivo. I have one VM that is a few TiB in size - our main fileserver.  There is no way I can hit Restore Time Objectives with that VM without Flash VM Boot, which made the extended wait for this must-have feature ever so painful. But I can finally sleep easier now that 11.1 is out with working Flash VM boot.

Anyway - you don't need to "test" for compatibility - it's all in the docs / release notes. 😉

Sorry I meant in the release notes table: https://helpcenter.nakivo.com/Release-Notes/Content/Release-Notes.htm

Major compatibility updates are listed there, which is what I read first.  Then if you're unsure, check the user guide, which is kept up to date for compatibility:

https://helpcenter.nakivo.com/User-Guide/Content/Deployment/System-Requirements/Supported-Platforms.htm

Supported platforms: Proxmox VE v8.3-1 - v8.4-1

Proxmox 9 will be fully supported in version 11.1.1 as our developers are working hard on it.

This version is planned to be available during this quarter and most probably by the next month.

I've just spun up a proxmox 8 test server to try things out whilst I wait for Proxmox 9 support.

One issue is that no containers show in the inventory - only qemu virtual machines.

Does Nakivo not support backing up proxmox containers? That would be a bit of a show stopper for us.

Not in the current version 11.1.0. I've installed the free PBS on my NAS alongside Nakivo, just for backing up the one LXC container I have. I would imagine that as more and more businesses make the switch from VMware to Proxmox, that more and more Proxmox features and improvements will come, and that this will be added eventually. Especially since one competitor I saw added it recently - back in August I think. I'd love to have it too - although not a show stopper at the moment.

NAKIVO does not support Proxmox containers.

Are there plans to do so in a future version?

I too am waiting anxiously for Nakivo support for PVE v9, as there are many features that I am looking forward to, yet a lack of official Nakivo support is holding me back from enjoying those benefits. There was a PVE v9 BETA in July, and the initial release in early August. We are now 3 months on. Surely PVE v9 support is coming soon?

Also released early August was Debian 13, and yet Debian 13 is still not listed here in Deployment Requirements. https://helpcenter.nakivo.com/User-Guide/Content/Deployment/System-Requirements/Deployment-Requirements.htm.

For Proxmox I get it - the Proxmox Beta cycle didn't last long.  For Debian, the story is way different. The Beta cycle of Debian 13 lasted over a year, with a "hard freeze" in 2024. Debian 13 support should really have been in the first patch that came out after Debian 13's official release. It's one of the most popular Linux server operating systems, probably only beaten by Ubuntu Server. So for there to be no Debian 13 support three months after release - that's a real head-scratcher.

Nakivo have always delivered in the past. May I ask - what is different this time around? I won't dare speculate, but feel that something has changed.

Proxmox VE v9.0 will be supported in NAKIVO version 11.2, ETA Q1/2026, likely January.

For Debian 13, our web development team has confirmed it's scheduled for NAKIVO v11.3, with the release date to be determined.

100% +1

I’m also waiting on Nakivo to add proper support for Proxmox VE 9. The beta hit in July and the GA release landed in early August—three months later and we still don’t have anything official.

Proxmox VE 9.1 finally brings the NFS-storage fixes we need, so the lack of Nakivo compatibility is a real blocker. Competitor already supports the new version, which makes them look a lot more responsive right now.

With the “VMware exodus” in full swing, many decision-makers are weighing whether to stay with what they have, go with Nakivo or switch to a solution that actually works with the latest Proxmox. If Nakivo can’t catch up quickly, we’ll be forced to look elsewhere, especially since moving from Competitor to Nakivo hinges on this support being in place ASAP.

It’s puzzling that Nakivo, which has historically been quick to add platform support, is taking this long.

Hopefully this isn’t a sign of deeper issues; otherwise it’s going to shake a lot of customers’ confidence.

Previous post from the official moderator said, "Proxmox VE v9.0 will be supported in NAKIVO version 11.2, ETA Q1/2026, likely January."  Assume that will now be for 9.1, as 9.1 only just went GA this week.

Yes I can see that. Hoping that Nakivo would get the hint a bit more. But appears they they are being quiet on this front, they aren't replying or interacting on their forum when being pushed on these timings. The ability to react is a major part of choosing a vendor to go with, so far Competitor has shown they are more nimble which is strange for how big they are.

Anyways, hope nakivo realise they have an opportunity with the mass vmware exit as backup product's will be ripped and replaced due to costs being looked at for every level of the stack as this exodus is forcing everything to be looked at.

Hi @Digital Ridge,

It will be supported in NAKIVO version 11.2, ETA Q1/2026, likely January. The Beta 11.2 might be released in December.

For now, you can try the workaround below:

For Proxmox v9, the VM machine type must be changed to 9.2 or lower version for backup and recovery to work.
