Microsoft 365 protection

Recommended Posts

Hi, @Will.dr!

Microsoft initially ensures the availability of services and not data protection. In this case, the user is responsible for data protection and recovery if something goes wrong. Microsoft 365 is responsible for:

- Protecting its platform from hackers
- Data protection in case of operating errors, natural disasters, and other failures that happen to its datacenters (mainly through geo-replication)
- Some help in case of accidental data deletions by offering users Recycle Bin and limited retention policies.

These options don't satisfy all of the data protection and data recovery needs:

- The data can be deleted by mistake or maliciously.
- Point-in-time recovery isn't available in Microsoft 365.
- Microsoft 365 saves the deleted data only for 14-days, so you have to notice the change/deletion early enough to use native restoration.
- Retention policies and Recycle Bin are not as flexible as third-party backup and recovery solutions.
- Long-term retention isn't available for compliance or e-discovery purposes.

The section 6b of the Microsoft Services Agreement (https://www.microsoft.com/en/servicesagreement/) states:
"We strive to keep the Services up and running; however, all online services suffer occasional disruptions and outages, and Microsoft is not liable for any disruption or loss you may suffer as a result.  In the event of an outage, you may not be able to retrieve Your Content or Data that you've stored. We recommend that you regularly backup Your Content and Data that you store on the Services or store using Third-Party Apps and Services."

Microsoft recommends using additional solutions to avoid data loss while using Microsoft 365.
