Amazon EC2 and S3 basic advice

Hi, @Kiya Wilks!

When it comes to data protection, all the experts recommend following the 3-2-1 backup rule. According to the plan, you should store one of your copies offsite. Cloud-based storages including Amazon products can be a solution for an offsite data storage.

Amazon EC2 means Elastic Cloud Computing. Amazon EC2 instances are VMs running in the Amazon cloud on Amazon servers. The data is stored in EBS (Elastic Block Storage) volumes. EBS volumes are similar to virtual disks. Basically, an EBS is a container to store data and is classified as block storage.

Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service) is the Amazon object storage service. In this case, a data storing container is a bucket. Amazon S3 isn't an example of a block storage. Basic data storage units are buckets, which makes Amazon S3 an object-based storage. Its main advantage is versioning that can be very helpful for data recovery.
