  1. Hello @Dan Avaropoint

Thank you for your patience during our investigation.

According to information from our Development Team, the Synology Team might need up to a few weeks to check the updaters for a new version and release them on Synology Package Center. We are so sorry for this temporary inconvenience.

In the meantime, it is possible to run the update manually with the ".sh" updater.

Please create a new ticket and let us know the CPU architecture of their Synology NAS (x86_64, ARMv7, or ARMv8), and then we will send them the necessary update or we suggest arranging the remote meeting to support as they need.

We are looking forward to hearing from you. Should you need any further information, please do not hesitate to contact us.

@3STYLER Thank you for your post and request.

Please follow the below steps to update Nakivo 10.5 to 10.6 manually for Synology DSM 7.

How to update NBR to v10.5 or higher on Synology x86_x64 with DSM7 via SSH console
    Type.

Synology DSM7 natively supports only NBR 10.5.1 installed from AppCenter.

Please use this article on how to update NBR to v10.6.0 or higher on Synology x86_x64 with DSM7 via SSH console:

    1. Install the NBR version 10.5.1 via Synology AppCenter, replacing folder "user-data" if needed after successful installation.

    2. Download the newest NBR version installation script for Synology NAS, for example, for the x86_x64 platform.

    3. Copy downloaded file to your Synology somewhere, for example to /tmp or /volume1/updates via WinCSP or SSH:
    mkdir /volume1/updates && cd /volume1/updates && wget https://maglar.box.com/shared/static/rx0890ym7xzg3xgi1g3bd50n672zpjfz.sh

    4. Stop NAKIVO services: Package center -- Installed -- NAKIVO -- Action -- Stop.

    5. Connect to Synology via SSH (Putty) using an admin account.

    6. Get root privileges running the following command:
    sudo -i
enter your admin password when prompted.

    7. Run the following commands to replace existing NBR director with newest version:

    cd /volume1/updates
    chmod +x rx0890ym7xzg3xgi1g3bd50n672zpjfz.sh
    ./rx0890ym7xzg3xgi1g3bd50n672zpjfz.sh

    8. Start NAKIVO services if needed: Package center -- Installed -- NAKIVO -- Action -- Start.

Please add Nakivo Transporter 10.6 to the Synology App Store

    Hello, @3STYLER

Thank you for your post and request. For DSM 7 the only way to get NAKIVO 10.6 is to install 10.5.1 from Synology App Center and then manually update it to 10.6 by following this guidance: https://helpcenter.nakivo.com/User-Guide/Content/Deployment/Updating-NAKIVO-Backup-and-Replication/Updating-on-Synology-NAS.htm#Updating2 NAKIVO 10.6 for DSM 7 in Synology App Center will be available later, probably in a couple of weeks.

Please share with us the result and if you require further assistance from us. We are looking forward to hearing from you.

How can this be, when you just released this version of Nakivo?

Did you just build a release that doesn't support the latest version of DSM for Synology?

Hello, @Dan Avaropoint, please, accept our sincerest apologies for the inconvenience! The Synology DSM7 only allows installing the signed packages in the Package Center.

So we cannot use the package to upload and install to DSM7 manually. The latest version needs to be signed and allowed via Synology's Package Center. It will be updated soon from the Synology side.

    >>> However, V10.5x is fine to run on this version of DSM???

Yes, the installed version still works well. If you have any issues with jobs, please generate and send us a new support bundle (https://helpcenter.nakivo.com/User-Guide/Content/Settings/Support-Bundles.htm) for further investigation of the issue. We are looking forward to your feedback. Should you need any further information, do not hesitate to contact us.

  8. We are excited to announce the general availability of NAKIVO Backup & Replication v10.6 along with the launch of NAS Backup for protecting file share data.

The new NAS Backup from NAKIVO allows you to protect data stored on file shares on NAS devices, Windows servers, and Linux servers. Back up entire file shares or specific folders within your file shares with the NFS v3, SMB v2 or SMB v3 protocols. Recover folders and individual files from a file share backup to a custom location.

Backup from HPE Nimble Storage snapshots improves VM backup performance by eliminating the need for frequent VM snapshots that can heavily overload the production environment. Create backups of VMware vSphere VMs directly from HPE Nimble Storage snapshots instead of regular VM snapshots to reduce the strain on your production environment.

Microsoft 365 Groups backup expands the coverage of Microsoft 365 data protection to include Microsoft 365 Groups. The feature allows you to back up and restore Microsoft 365 group mailboxes and group sites. Recover group mailbox items like emails, files, and OneNote folders in addition to group site items like document libraries, lists, and subsites in just a few clicks.

Hardened AMI is the latest addition to the anti-ransomware toolset of NAKIVO Backup & Replication. Deploy the solution as an AMI (Amazon Machine Image) running Ubuntu Server and enable immutability for recovery points sent to the local repository deployed as part of the AMI. The data remains immutable for a period of your choice, during which it’s immune to modification, deletion, and encryption by ransomware.

External Database support improves solution stability by allowing you to use an external database for NAKIVO Backup & Replication instead of the built-in H2 database. In this way, you can avoid database corruption that might occur in large environments. You can create a new external database or use an existing one to increase reliability and prevent potential resource bottlenecks.

Try NAKIVO NAS Backup and all of the new features in NAKIVO Backup & Replication v10.6 for free today! Download the Free Trial and improve your environment’s resilience to data loss.

    Hi,

I have implemented a workaround. This works for me in the sense that it takes the load of my nas and moves it to my flash storage. Perhaps it will be of help to some one else, perhaps not. Try this at your own risk.

I stopped all tenants and the transporter service. I unmounted the existing ext4 filesystem that held all the SaaS repos and remounted it in another location.

I upgraded the va's virtual hardware to the current (7.0u2) and then added a new nfs backed 10TB vmdk (sda) and a 100GB flash backed vmdk (nvme0n1). I installed zfsutils-linux in the va and created a zpool on the nfs backed vmdk with metadata stored on the flash backed vmdk and mounted in the place of the original ext4 filesystem.

    zpool create nkv-saas -o ashift=13 -m /mnt/nkv-saas-repos /dev/sda special /dev/nvme0n1

I then copied all the saas repos to the new filesystem using rsync, and started the transporter service and the tenants.

    The difference is shown below.

BEFORE: (ext4 on nfs backed vmdk): continuous 3K-25K IOPs over nfs

    Get used space 181.0-GB: 14min. 36sec. 248mls

AFTER: (zfs on nfs backed vmdk with metadata on flash backed vmdk): peaks at ~250 nfs IOPs during a backup, little to no load the rest of the time.

    Get used space 181.9-GB: 1min. 44sec. 278mls

I'm using 23% of the 10T vmdk on my NAS and 29% of the 100G vmdk on my directly attached flash array so the amount of flash storage required is trivial.

I still think that the way Nakivo tracks used space is naive at best. Walking the filesystem every 30 minutes to add up the space used by what could be hundreds of millions of files ( I'm already up to 21M files ) is a waste of system resources. Even more so considering that the repo is PostgreSQL database and all the files in the repo are managed by Nakivo. A far more efficient approach would be to track the blob sizes in the database and, if needed, measure the sizes of the database and other files.

    -Mark

@Manic Mark, thank you for your post. In this case, this is a workaround that allows moving repository IOPS to another storage.

For further investigation, we need a new support bundle if it is still necessary.

Please note your ticket ID #142199 in the description.

We will add information from the forum thread to the ticket and check all information. We are looking forward to your feedback.

Should you need any further information, please do not hesitate to contact us.

    Hi,

I disabled the auto refresh of the repositories but it did not make any change to the usage.

After some digging it looks like the transporter ( or pgsql ) is repeatedly trying to determine the used and free space in the repository.

looking at all_pg_sql.log, it keeps logging eventl like this:

I suspect that the "Get used space" is the culprit where it is walking the directory structure and adding up the size of all the files in the repo (which contains ~3.3M files in this case). It appears to be triggered at tenant startup (or repo mount) and then 30 minutes after the previous iteration completes.

I have also tried switching off "system.repository.refresh.backup.size.calculation" under expert settings but "Get used space" still runs.

Hello, @Manic Mark Please accept our apologies to keep you waiting. Our engineer team is still in the process of ticket investigation. We will get back to you the soonest with updates.

Thank you for understanding and your patience!

    Same for Flash Boot

If you want to backup Hyper-V VM, please add Hyper-V into the inventory: https://helpcenter.nakivo.com/User-Guide/Content/Settings/Inventory/Adding-Hyper-V-Servers.htm

    Hello,

    Nakivo noob here,

I've just started working in a company where we are using Nakivo to backup the vcenter

everything is working fine, but I'd like to integrate it with the Active directory and play with it a little bit.

I log on as admin which has the Administrator role, (all permissions say full access)

but when I go to users and roles --> ad integration its greyed out.

It's as if I dont have sufficient  permissions to configure the AD,  but under users and roles, there are only two users with the same administration role.   (picture included)

the websites I look at  either are out of date or do not mention why that could happen:

    https://helpcenter.nakivo.com/User-Guide/Content/Settings/General/Users-and-Roles/Users-and-Roles.htm  https://de0.nakivo.com/blog/active-directory-integration-setup/

any help on how to proceed would e greatly appreciated

    Thank you

Hello, @malek Kindly note that AD integration is license edition dependable. So as you can see from the attachment, only Enterprise/Enterprise essentials and Enterprise plus editions enable the AD integration feature, so the License needs to be upgraded to use it. Please, let me know if I you need any further assistance.

What is this background process doing that requires this much IO? Is there some way I can tell if it is actually accomplishing anything? Is there a way to limit it to running out of hours?

Hello, Mark. It is really hard to say what is going on without checking the logs. We can guess the product is doing the hourly repository refresh. Please try to change it to 4-6 hours and check if that makes any difference (see the attached sreenshot).

You can post the logs here but it is better to send a support bundle for further investigation to our Support team (https://helpcenter.nakivo.com/display/NH/Support+Bundles).

    Greetings,

In lieu of an explanation, I am posting, in part, my email to my Sales Agent at Nakivo, Thomas Semerich.
    .

    "Hi Thomas,

I spent most of an hour with Support earlier today, and I must say, it was an entirely positive experience.

I recently recovered from a serious device failure on our office network using a 'competing' tool. I set up the schema, but their technicians finished implementation and they signed off on their side of our DR plan. That was important because I was in a project with them that included purchasing DR support ahead of time. Less than 60 days in their care, two out of four drives in a critical erray dropped and I lost ~9Tb of shared storage. Mostly my fault, not theirs. I took responsibility for this network a year ago and had not checked on the age of those drives. It turns out they had been operational for 2+ years. I got unlucky and 2 failed within 24 hours. On that Datastore was a 3Tb VHD. Thankfully the rest of my data survived, but I was stuck with a backup of that partition that was 36 hours old. It took 134 hours, 5 full days, to stand up that Windows server because the data partition took that long to build. Thankfully that VM was only serving as a file server at the time, but I was building it out as our primary CAD SQL server. Our Vault. If this had happened exactly the same way a month later, our Company would have been without all of our Engineering horsepower for a week. That would do serious harm to our Company, and would almost certainly result in my being fired.

Within 15 minutes, the tech I was working with understood the story I outlined above. He then verbally simulated the event, and in real-time showed me three alternatives available through the Nakivo platform that would have solved my issue. In one case, he used "Universal Object recovery" to get my data back and shareable in less than 46 seconds. He was phenomenal at his job, and I wish I could call him out by name. Unfortunately I didn't write it down and it does not appear in my email record with support, as far as I can tell.

Having your platform available on Synology's OS is brilliant. The person who made that decision should be on a beach somewhere.

Giving me a way to save some face with my team without downloading, installing, or paying for anything up front, without even rebooting one of my devices, is priceless. I will be writing up my recent experience in the coming days and will name Nakivo's concept as the silver lining in an otherwise dismal story.

While we might never be your most profitable client, I will volunteer to be a cheerleader for your tech team, and your business model.

I will be in touch in a few weeks to establish which license package to go with..."

I am continuing my evaluation of Nakivo's product, but I have nothing but positive input to go by so far.

Hello, Greg Mitchell, thank you for a great feedback. I will send it to our team. We are honored to have clients like you. Please let us know if we can help in the future.

I have a very small VMWare Essentials environment.

    2 Dell R340 Hosts, 1 socket each
Backing up 3 Windows Server VMs running in VMWare esxi 7 u3
    1 Linux vm lab machine
    ~3Tb footprint
    2 Synology 4bay NAS RackStation RS820RP+, 18Tb storage each, 36Tb total storage

I recently had a real-life disaster scenario. One of my older Synology NAS Devices lost two drives out of 4 in less than 24 hours. A real-life lesson that a RAID Array (or any redundant disk storage) is not a backup. It is a slightly more reliable place to store data that needs to be backed up properly.

Also, I had not been backing up properly.

One of the Windows VMs services a ~2Tb vhd, mostly Video, Pictures, and Office Documents. This drive is trouble to back up. It averages about 3gb overall block change each day, an average of < 50Mb a day in new bits. Backing this up on the block-level using the VMWare backend takes forever. By the time you compress it, dedup, and write it, the Full backup took 6-8 hours (again, not using the Nokivo tools). The daily incrementals only took 6 minutes. Looking at the full backups, I thought "that is slow, but not horrible."

Restoring that file server took more than five full days, processing on brand new hardware, at ~30mb/s. During that time we were able to function as a company, but the pain was tremendous. I could restore individual files/folders upon request, but I could not launch that server until all of the blocks were in place. Needless to say, I am new to Nakivo because I am looking for a better tool.  I would like to avoid disasters in the future. I have only just installed Nakivo Backup on my Synology devices

I think it makes sense to create a Primary backup job that covers my 3 servers. I would eliminate that one vhd from the primary backup job and back those blocks up at the file level from the Windows OS to a secondary target. I could then replicate the vhd to the other host for a live backup, and process a compressed, deduped daily that gets tucked away, safe from ransomware.

Does that make sense, or am I missing something?

Additional note: To save money initially and because I was planning to use the free version of ESXi, I only bought one core per host. That makes fitting all of my active VMs on one host pretty hairy, and that is why I don't run a live replica of all 3 servers. If anyone would like to cure my ignorance, I am all ears.

    Thank you for your time.

    Greg

I am trying to install NAKIVO Free on a Synology NAS which is running DSM 7.0. According to the topic in this forum linked below, on DSM 7.0 installation of NAKIVO Free has to be done using the package manager of DSM. However I cannot find any way how to install the free version, since this package only installs the 14 Day Trial Version, and the Package for the free version which I downloaded from NAKIVO isn't installable due to this incompatibility/signing issue.

Could you please advise me on how to get the free version running directly on the NAS without any workarounds like installing it in a VM and using the NAS only as repository?

    Any update on this?

Looks like the current Nakivo package for Synology (10.5.1) is not compatible with DSM 7 (7.0.4)

Hello, @cbon Thank you for your interest in NAKIVO! Starting from the DSM 7 version of the firmware, Synology does not allow the installation of unsigned packages. So the only official source from which you can install NAKIVO at the moment is the Synology Package Center.

We in NAKIVO are doing all we can to deliver the new versions of the product as fast as possible 🧐

Due to the Synology internal testing workflow, it could take some time for the new version of NAKIVO to appear in the Package Center. Currently, the 10.5.1-61510 version of the NAKIVO is available via the Package Center on the DSM 7 version of the Synology NAS firmware.
